Romans 15:8-9 (NIV)
"For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy." |
Reflect
God's gifts to us are indescribably precious. Forgiveness, hope, new life, peace-these are gifts we will celebrate and sing about for all eternity. But don't miss this: every gift God gives is meant to lead us to Him. The real treasure is not just what God gives, but God Himself.
Think about forgiveness. Jesus became our servant, taking the punishment we deserved, so that we could be set free. But why? Was it just so we could feel better about ourselves, or escape punishment? No-God's mercy in forgiveness is meant to bring us all the way home to Him. Forgiveness is the door that opens to the greatest gift: knowing and enjoying God forever.
Romans 15:9 says the goal is that we would "glorify God for his mercy." Not just use God's gifts for our own comfort, but to see and savor the Giver Himself. God is most glorified when His mercy makes us delight in Him as the greatest gift of all.
So this Advent, ask God to awaken your heart to your deep need for mercy. And then let your soul be dazzled by the truth that the essence of God's mercy is Jesus Himself-God with us, God for us. Let His mercy fill your heart with praise and your hands with kindness, so that others see His mercy shining through you.
