What Does God "Sound Like?"

Yesterday, we explored the question: "What Does God Sound Like?" We were reminded of the incredible truth that the God of the universe desires to speak to us. He initiates the conversation, and hearing from Him is not reserved for a spiritual elite.

It's our inheritance as believers. Today, let's take 10 minutes to reflect on this message and make space to hear His voice.

Step 1

Pause and Acknowledge the Privilege

Take a moment to sit in silence. Reflect on the astounding truth that God wants to speak to you - not because of anything you've done, but because of His grace.

Hebrews 4:16

"Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

Presidents and CEOs have layers of gatekeepers, but God opens the door to His throne room for you.

Ask yourself

How does it change your perspective to know that God is approachable and wants to speak to you?

Step 2

Reflect on His Voice

God's voice may not be audible, but it's clear and personal. Yesterday, we learned that His voice often comes as:

  • A peaceful thought.
  • A nudge during prayer.
  • A scripture that seems to "come alive" in your situation.
  • A quiet prompting that is wise, pure, and gentle.

John 10:27

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

Reflect on this

When have you experienced a nudge, a sense of peace, or a scripture that spoke directly to your heart? How did you respond?

Take a moment to think back on recent days. Where might God have been speaking to you?

Step 3

Test What You're Hearing

Yesterday, we learned about three layers of discernment to recognize God's voice:

  1. Does it align with Scripture and God's character? God will never contradict His Word or act against His nature.
  2. What does it produce in you? God's voice brings peace, even in challenging directions - not confusion or fear.
  3. Do wise, godly people confirm it? Trusted mentors help us test and confirm what we're sensing.

Pray through this framework

Is there something you feel God is saying to you today? Use the three layers to test it:

  • Does it align with His Word?
  • Does it bring peace or clarity?
  • Who can you share this with for confirmation?

Step 4

Take a Step of Obedience

Hearing God's voice requires action. Yesterday, we learned that obedience keeps the channel open. God often gives fresh direction after we've acted on the last thing He showed us.

Reflect

Is there something God has already spoken to you that you haven't acted on yet?

What is one step of obedience you can take today?

Pray and ask God for the courage and clarity to obey His voice, even in small ways.

Step 5

Commit to Growing in Discernment

Hearing God isn't a one-time event; it's a journey. Your ability to recognize His voice grows as you spend time in His Word, cultivate quiet moments, and walk alongside other believers.

Romans 12:2

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

Ask yourself

How can I make time this week to be quiet before God?

Who in my life can help me grow in discernment?

Closing Thought

As we learned yesterday, God's voice isn't in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire - it's in the still small whisper. The more we know Him - through His Word, through prayer, and in community - the more clearly we'll recognize when He speaks.

Take these 10 minutes today to pause, reflect, and listen. God is speaking. Are you listening?

"I am His sheep. He is my Shepherd. He said His sheep hear His voice."

Celebration Church Family Challenge

This week, spend 5 minutes each day in silence, asking God to speak and journaling what you sense. Let's grow together in recognizing His voice!
