Serve Day Devo: Day Two
God's Heart for the City
Scripture: Mark 8:1-8
The Bible often describes Jesus as being “moved with compassion.” When He sees a physical need, His heart is moved with compassion. He uses their physical need to point them to a greater spiritual truth about God’s love and acceptance.
Mark 8:1-8 shows us an example of this. After preaching for days, Jesus is moved with compassion and wants to feed the hungry crowds. A great miracle happens when the loaves and fish multiply, but maybe an even greater miracle is how Jesus uses the lunch of a boy and 12 confused, inexperienced guys to pull off a mass feeding event.

Simply because they were obedient and showed up, they were able to experience the care and abundant provision of Jesus firsthand.
God’s heart is full of compassion for the people of Shreveport-Bossier. He loves and cares for them. But His heart is also full of a desire to use people like us to meet their needs. He wants us to not just meet them so that they’re physically provided for, but so that they can see the love of Jesus for them. He wants us to see and experience His love, compassion, and miraculous provision firsthand. On Serve Day, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we get to experience the love that Jesus has for the people of our city.
Prayer Points:
- Pray that God would show you His compassion and love for someone you serve on Saturday.
- Pray for the people we are serving to experience God’s love through the physical needs we are meeting.
- Pray for God to multiply our efforts, that our simple projects would have lasting impact.
