Advent Day Five: The Reason for Christmas—Victory Over Sin

The Reason for Christmas - Victory Over Sin

It's easy to let Christmas blur into just a sentimental season-lights, music, and tradition. But the Bible is crystal clear on why Christmas happened. Twice in 1 John 3, we're told exactly why Jesus came: to take away sin, and to destroy the works of the devil.

John reminds us, "He appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin." Jesus' sinless life wasn't just a detail-it was the foundation of His mission. Only the perfect Son of God could offer Himself as the sacrifice that wipes out our guilt.

John says it again: "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work." What's the devil's work? Sin - the rebellion, the shame, the chains that hold us back. Jesus came to break those chains, cancel our debt, and set us free.

Don't leave this truth in the abstract. Jesus came to deal with your sin and your struggle. He came to give you victory-not just once, but every single day. As Paul puts it: "The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20, NIV)

This Christmas, let the truth sink in: Jesus came for you. He came to destroy sin's grip on your life, to give you a new story, and to walk with you in victory.

Quotes for Today

"Christmas is when the infinite became an infant." - Adrian Rogers

• Where do you need Jesus to bring freedom and victory in your life right now?

• How can you make this Christmas personal, celebrating Jesus as your Savior and Deliverer?

Action Steps

• Take a moment to honestly name a sin or struggle you've been carrying. Surrender it to Jesus and thank Him for coming to destroy its hold on you.

• Write Galatians 2:20 somewhere you'll see it this week. Use it as a daily reminder that Jesus loves you and gave Himself for you.

Prayer Points

• Thank Jesus for taking your sin and destroying the enemy's work in your life.

• Ask God for fresh faith to walk in the freedom and victory Jesus has bought for you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to take away my sin and to destroy the work of the enemy. Help me to receive the freedom You purchased on the cross and to walk each day in the victory You've won. Strengthen my faith and give me courage to live in the new life You've given. Amen.

This Advent, remember: Christmas means victory-because Jesus came to set us free.
