Reflect
Have you ever wondered why Jesus so often referred to Himself as the "Son of Man"? It's a phrase we hear a lot in the Gospels-over eighty times, in fact-and Jesus is the only one who calls Himself this. There's a reason for that, and it's a key to understanding the wonder of Advent.
The title "Son of Man" goes all the way back to a prophetic vision in Daniel 7:13-14. Daniel describes seeing "one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven," who is presented before God and given everlasting dominion, glory, and a kingdom that will never be destroyed.
"His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed." (Daniel 7:14, NIV)
This title is packed with meaning. On the surface, it sounds humble and ordinary-"son of man" could simply mean "human." But hidden inside it is a claim to kingship, glory, and divine authority. Jesus is both-fully human, able to relate to our struggles, and fully God, deserving of all worship.
But here's the twist: Jesus, the Son of Man, reveals His greatest glory not by seizing a throne, but by being lifted up on a cross.
"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him." (John 3:14-15, NIV)
The real wonder of Advent is that the everlasting King came near, not just to rule, but to rescue. His glory is found in His humility, His strength in His sacrifice.
The greatest glory you and I will ever see is the glory of the Son of Man, the Lord of heaven-the One whose dominion is everlasting.
